Article on Urology Fellowships
Pursuing a career in urology is not for the feeble minded due to the rigorous training that is generally required of all urologists. In the United States, in order to become a urologist, the first thing is to get a medical degree, followed by two years of training in general surgery and finally, another two to three years of urologic training. The urologic training programs are also referred to as urology fellowships and there are several of them in the United States, a few of which will be mentioned here.
Colombia University Medical Center Minimally Invasive Urology Fellowships
This fellowship, offered by the CUMC is an international fellowship program open to qualified urologists from all over the world. The program provides fellowships ranging from two months to a maximum of one year’s training for both residents (interested in learning basic minimally invasive skills) and already established urologists (interested in updating their minimally invasive techniques). The program can also be renewed after the first year if so desired for another three months during which the fellows have the opportunity of gaining hands on experience with the laboratory animals.
The University of Chicago Medical Center Minimally Invasive Uro-Oncology Fellowship Program
This Urology Fellowship offered by the University of Chicago Hospitals provides a resident each year with the opportunity of being trained in minimally invasive Uro-Oncology techniques for a period of two years. Additionally, the school also offers 1 year minimally invasive urology fellowships and another 1 year research based fellowship. The training is for proficiency in robotic radical prostatectomy, robotic radical cystoprostatectomy, laparoscopic radical nephrectomy, laparoscopic pyeloplasty, open radical cystectomy and open partial nephrectomy, just to mention a few.
The Mayo Clinic Endourology Fellowship Program
This program lasts for two years and takes place at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. One year is for research and the other year for clinical rotation. The training aims to develop leaders in endourology with proficiency in all the aspects of endourology such as: robotic urology surgery, endoscopic urologic procedures, extirpative and reconstructive urologic laparoscopy, laparoscopic donor nephrectomy, the surgical and nonsurgical management methods of urolithiasis and percutaneous access with emphasis on the academic aspects.
Stanford School of Medicine Pediatric Urology Fellowship
The Stanford pediatric urology fellowships accredited by the ACGME is a 2 year training program which aims to prepare successful applicants or fellows interested in a career in academic medicine. The program provides proficiency training in the care of pediatric urological cases in addition to a solid clinical research foundation. As with most other fellowship programs, the first year is basically spent on research in clinical health sciences or basic science and the second year is for clinical rotation at the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital and the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.
In conclusion, a lot of other urology fellowships are available for interested urologists in virtually all the fields of urology and a further search on the internet will yield more of these fellowships.
