Most students today are faced with an increased set of challenges before eventually entering the workforce. Employers want the new people they hire to have post-secondary education if they don’t have years of experience. Attending either university or college, however, has a hefty financial burden associated with it which makes it difficult for many students to attain.
Help from Financial Aid
In order to address these increased costs, several organizations have begun to create financial aid programs to help students complete their post-secondary education. Financial aid is intended to help students to pay for the costs of university or college. This includes tuition, student fees, books and course supplies. It is also meant to help with the basic costs of living for the student.
Types of Aid
There are many sources of financial aid which are available for students to apply for. Generally, they fall into one of two categories: aid based on merit or on need. Financial aid which is given our based on merit takes into account the students academic history, GPA and recommendations from professors in order to award them. Aid which is awarded based on need is intended to help low-income families to send their children to school
Student Loans vs Grants
Since most students require some kind of financial support through post-secondary education, student loans have become the most popular way to do this. Student loans are administered by both the governments and the student’s financial institution, and do not accrue any interest during the time that the student is still in school. After graduation, it becomes a low-interest loan that requires repayment. Grants and scholarships, on the other hand, never need to be repaid. This means that students are less likely to graduate with a large debt to repay as they are trying to enter the work force.
Who Offers Financial Aid?
Various kinds of financial support for school are offered both by government programs and private institutions. Some groups offer scholarships for students in special interest groups, for example there are bursaries available to encourage African American women to attend post-secondary education. Other organizations will offer awards for students based on the discipline they are studying, or even on research projects they are completing. Up to date information about available grants, scholarships and bursaries can be found by going to a financial aid office at a university or college.
Eligibility Requirements
The eligibility for financial aid depends on the type of help being applied for. Almost all will require the applicant to be a student enrolled in an accredited college or university. Many scholarships and grants will have an academic requirement, such as a high GPA or recommendation by a faculty member. Other awards which are intended for low income families will have financial requirements.
Financial aid provides a method for many students to attend university or college, who might not have been able to otherwise. Whether or not it is a repayable loan or a free grant, each are designed to give a student a helping hand while they are completing their education.
