Formatting Your Resume To The Proper Length
|
If you have only worked at one position in your whole life and now, due to downsizing, you find yourself out of work and on the hunt for a new one; your resume may only be one page. If you have had many achievements and accomplishments that you need to include on your resume or if your work history contains more than one position, your resume may exceed that one page.
It is going to hurt your chances at getting a job if your resume is more than a page long? The answer in a word is no. Where it was once thought that a resume should not exceed one page, this is now a thing of the past. In todays workforce, many change jobs for more money or for the challenge of a new career so resumes with more than one page are not considered to be too much. The following are some helpful hints for formatting a good resume.
Length The length of the resume is not as important as the content and format. Your work history should include the last five years of employment or time off. If you have had only one position in the past five years, you can list your last three positions unless you have had only one. Some may have done internships and may have moved jobs frequently, even if this exceeds one page, you still need to include them. It does not matter how long your resume is as long as the content is relevant.
Heading The top of the first page should be left for all of your personal information. Your name should be larger than the rest of the text so that it can be easily seen. You really want them to know whose resume that they are looking at. If you need to use a quarter or a third of the first page for your information, there is nothing wrong with that. Just make sure that your address and other vital information is located close to your name and is a couple of font points smaller.
Formatting the Body There are many ways to format the body of the text. If you plan on using indentations, you should your tab key or create a table to keep all the lines in order. Using your space key can leave half spaces in between text which can look sloppy when read. When in doubt, print out the resume before emailing or uploading it. You may find that the printed format looks totally different from what your computer screen shows. This is going to allow you to make the changes in the format so it looks clean and lined up properly.
Following these hints can mean the difference between a messy resume that is not relevant to submitting one that looks professionally created. Since your resume represents you, you do not want to appear messy with no thought to detail. Having more than one page is not going to be a problem.
