Four Reasons Not To Use Resume Templates
|
When it comes to writing a resume, you may be tempted to check out some of the free resume templates you can find. There are sites and programs all over the internet that allow you to download resume templates, including Microsoft Office Word. While this seems like a good idea to get a professionally laid out resume with the sections organized to be the most effective in a hiring situation, with the font and sizes put together to flow wonderfully and to achieve a polished and complete look, there are at least four reasons why you shouldn’t use a resume template.
Reason #1 Not to Use a Resume Template
Employers can generally tell if you use a resume template, and depending upon the type of job they may prefer an employee who has the skills to write up and lay out their own resume. A template is basically a generic layout that anyone can fill out, when it comes to getting an employer’s attention; a unique and personalized resume goes a long way.
Reason #2 Not to Use a Resume Template
Unless you know a bit about actually laying out a resume you may get a poorly made template that will waste a lot of your time trying to make it look good. You could probably do as well writing your own and accomplish it much faster as well.
Reason #3 Not to Use a Resume Template
Terminology changes quite often in the world of job searching. What may appear on a template resume as a section for “Goals” could actually be “Objectives” on a newer template. You would have to know what is current and what isn’t in the world of resumes in order to choose the right template. When you write a resume yourself, you can lay it out anyway you like and include the topics of your choice- and you are able to look up the most current or field related terms.
Reason #4 Not to Use a Resume Template
Customization is somewhat limited when using a resume template. You may be searching for a job in a field that requires more or less information in certain areas. If you simply write your own resume you can include the highlights and accomplishments you wish to include.
The job market is difficult these days. The unemployment rates are climbing daily, so having a good resume is becoming more important to job searchers. Taking the time to streamline and formulate your very own resume is worth the effort. It is all about selling yourself, your skills, your objectives and your experience to convince a potential employer that you are the right person for the job.
It is not difficult to craft a unique resume without a template. Just keep in mind that a resume needs to be streamlined and succinct, as well as organized and easy for a potential employer to read and see what the benefits are to hiring you. Don’t stress about choosing the perfect font or page trim, just get your information on there efficiently and rest assured that those polished templates aren’t unique or individual and the choice page trim isn’t going to get someone a job.
