How To Choose A Resume Format
|
Anyone who has been in the job market is probably aware that there are several different resume formats to choose from. The different formats are often used for different fields of employment and are designed to highlight field specific items. If you are in the market for a new job then a resume is probably on your to-do list.
As time goes by there are more and more resume layouts that come and go, some topics are removed, some terminology is changed, and the whole design may change. If you have an older resume that you want to update in order to find a new job, you have more to do than just update your work experience. Basically if your resume is more than 1 year old you should re-work the entire resume.
Current resume formats can be found at resume service websites, they often feature resume samples. You can also download resume templates that will help you organize your information into a resume format that is contemporary and professional.
When you are trying to decide which resume format to use, you should search for resume templates that are specific to your line of work. For example if you are in advertising, you will of course want your resume to really stand out and allow you to “sell yourself” through not only the information but the layout as well. Many of the templates and samples will also include current terminology to help you make your resume up to date and professional. If you are writing your resume on your own, you may put on your resume that you “worked with a group and rewrote the employee handbook” but if you use current terminology you could say that you “collaborated with a team to update and rework company policies”. Anyone can see that you are saying the same thing, but that it looks more professional the second way.
Take advantage of every possible tip and help you can find when writing your resume, this includes viewing samples, viewing templates and using your imagination to put together a well laid out resume that is modern and effective.
Remember while you are writing your resume that a potential employer will only look at your finished product for about 30 seconds. So it is important to put all the information he needs to decide to interview you on the front page. If your qualifications intrigue him, he may go to the second page. If your resume is longer than 2 pages, you should go back and remove more of the “fluff”. A resume should be neat, clean, concise and succinct.
No matter what format you use for your resume, always take the time to proofread and check to see how your resume looks after printing before you submit it to a potential employer. Your resume is the first impression that a potential employer will have of you, and you want it to make him want to know more and call you for an interview.
