How To Get A Summer Job
|
Now that school's out, you may be wondering how to get a summer job. Many students want to work during the summer months to make some extra money; you may need it for tuition in the fall, or just as extra spending cash. Since most students get out for summer break around the same time, you know there will be plenty of competition. The tips below explain how to get a summer job before they are all filled.
1. Start your search for work before school lets out. If you wait until school is out, you're likely to have a hard time getting a summer job as there will likely be hundreds of others in search of work as well. Begin looking a few weeks before school ends so that you have a head start on available job opportunities.
2. Have an up-to-date resume ready to go. Many companies don't require a resume for summer work, but you will have one ready in case they do. Even if a company doesn't require it, go ahead and attach your resume to the back of your application. This will impress employers, and they will see that you have put in additional effort in order to find work.
3. Check the classified section. Look through your local newspaper to see if there are any job ads requesting applicants for summer work.
4. Go online. You can post an application or resume at many online job boards; also search for work in your area by searching for the type of work you are looking for, as well as city and state. Many companies post jobs online today instead of advertising in the local newspaper.
5. Check around the area where you live. If you're having trouble finding a summer job with a company, ask around the neighborhood to see if any elderly neighbors or families with young children need your services. You can offer to babysit school-age children of those parents who work, mow lawns or do yard clean up.
6. Be on the lookout when you are out and about. Many businesses simply hang a "help wanted" sign in the window when they need workers. While you are out shopping or running errands, be alert and pay attention, especially with businesses like fast food restaurants, gas stations and convenience stores.
7. Put an application in and follow up. Some companies collect applications, then go through them to see who qualifies for the job a few days later. Once you have submitted your application and resume, follow up. Most applicants don't do this, so you will be one step ahead in getting the job! Call within 2 to 3 days of turning in your application, and go by to check the status any time you are in the area. Persistence pays off!
When you are applying for a job in person, always dress nice and present yourself in a professional manner. Avoid flip flops and revealing clothes, cover up tattoos and remove rings from piercings. Now that you know how to get a summer job, go out there and get busy!
