How To Update A Resume Quickly And Efficiently
|
If you have found yourself back in the job market due to company downsizing or a layoff, you may already have a pretty decent resume that just needs updating. This resume was probably written to be handed in on paper rather than uploaded to the Internet. There are some new standards that should be taken into account when updating your resume for the new market it is going to be submitted to. You need to add in a few keywords into your work history and objective as well as update the format just a bit. These tips do not take much time and can have you at an interview before you know it.
• Format – You want your new resume to have some spacing in between the topics and work history. Forget the old adage that the resume should not exceed one to two pages. This is an old and outdated format rule. Having spacing in between actually allows the reader to be able to pick out your words more and sections more easily. Most of the resumes you are going to be submitting are going to be read on a computer screen. Scrolling is much easier when there are two line spaces between each category and prior positions you are listing.
• Love the Tab Button – When setting up your resume, get rid of the outdated and old bullets and numbers and use the tab button instead. This is going to transfer easily to a text document that does not allow for such formatting. Most companies are going to want you to submit your resume electronically and unless they have the same version of the word processor that you do, the format is going to be lost and the resume is not going to look tidy. Remember that the resume you submit offers the recruiter a first impression of you; make sure it is a good one.
• Pare Down the Resume – If you used the long paragraph bases resume when you last updated it, you need to pare it down a bit. Instead of using full sentences or paragraphs to explain your duties, use a list that is keyword based. The tab button can be used for creating these lists. It is going to be much easier for a recruiter to scan a list than it is for them to read an entire paragraph. You want them to get as much information about you as quickly as possible. They are not going to want to read through paragraphs and paragraphs of text.
These tips for updating your resume are going to help you to have a better chance at getting that job that is needed. It can only take a few minutes but can mean the difference when recruiters read through it. Remember to also highlight your skills and abilities briefly and proof read your resume before submitting it. Some may want to have a second pair of eyes look over the resume to make sure that there are no mistakes that you may have missed.
