It is a fact of life these days that unemployment is on the rise and spending is on a decline. People are simply putting their money away and not making the large purchases that they were making just a few years ago. This has caused a decrease in sales that are making many companies shut down. The domino effect means that there are more positions that are being filled by those in sales. So how does one who is in sales find a new job when their company is downsizing and the market is flooded with salespeople looking for work? Your resume is going to be the most important factor in getting your foot in the door. If you are a great salesperson, you can sell yourself at the interview and get the job.
Using the Objective to Sell Your Resume
Many professional resume builders are going to frown on having a sales based objective on a resume. This should be no means discourage you from adding one. What better product to sell than yourself? If you really want to get that new sales position, you are going to have to go all out here and really put forth what you can offer the company and what you expect from them in return. Do not simply pare down your cover letter, be creative and come up with something new to say here.
Words Not to Use on a Resume
If you are selling yourself, and you are to some degree, then you should never use the words or phrases “entry level”, “chance for advancement” or “challenging”. These words and phrases are generic and every single person who is applying for the position is probably using the same ones. The position you want is in sales; everyone wants the chance for advancement and this is actually putting the horse before the carriage since you are basically saying that what you are applying for is not what you really want. Every sales position in this day and age is a challenge and you are probably already applying for an entry level position. These words and phrases become redundant and can cause the company’s representative to pass up on your resume and turn to the next one.
Be Creative
When writing your resume, be creative without being overly flamboyant. While you want to catch the attention of the company, you do not want to go over the top either. A small touch of humor may be appreciated, but this is a business resume. Try using your creative sales techniques in your resume and you are going to be surprised by the results.
When applying for a sales position, your resume really needs to be honed and should bring out your best sales qualities. If you cannot sell yourself to a future employer, how can you sell their product? This is what is going to be looked when agents for the company are going through hundreds of resumes. Finding one, hopefully yours, that really stands out is going to take away from the monotony and they are going to remember you above all others.
