Applying For College Admission

Information about Applying For College Admission
When applying for college admission in the United States, international students need to begin the process much sooner than students who live in the United States. This is because international students often have additional requirements that they must meet in order to not only gain admission to the school, but to also obtain authorization to live in the United States. Some important information may also be found on the school’s website as well.
Finding Out the Requirements of the School
International students should be aware that there is no central application system for applying for college admission in the United States. Every school is different, and will have its own unique application process. The general trend though is that the more prestigious schools tend to have more requirements for admission, while lesser known schools tend to be more lax. The bottom line is that international students should always find out the requirements for each school by checking with the international student services office individually before applying.
General Similarities
Although some details may differ, most schools have similarities in their procedures for applying for college admission with regard to the submission of documents. The majority of schools require that students write at least one essay on a particular topic. Most schools also require that international students undergo admissions testing. These tests include the TOEFL or IELTS to verify the student’s English language skills. Schools may also do additional tests to determine the student’s level of knowledge with regard to subjects studied in prior education that was obtained in the student’s country of origin.
Official Transcripts
Schools also require that students present official transcripts when applying for college admission. These transcripts should come from the student’s secondary school. If the student has obtained credits from a college or university, those transcripts must be provided as well. With the right documentation, students may also be eligible to obtain credits toward the US degree that they are pursuing if the transcripts demonstrate significant prior course work in courses related to the degree.
Obtaining Authorization to Live in the United States
The most important thing that students must obtain before applying for college admission is the proper authorization to live temporarily in the United States. Even if the college does admit the student for study, the student will not be allowed to enter the United States and begin studying at the school unless the proper documentation has been acquired first. The international student services office at the college may possibly be able to contact the appropriate government officials in the student’s country of origin to facilitate the process of obtaining the necessary government documents.
How to Ensure Acceptance
There is no guarantee that students will be admitted to a particular US college or university and that is why it is very important for students to apply to several schools. Being an international student makes the application process even more competitive because most schools have quotas as to the number of international students they will accept. International students should be well organized and prepared for the process.
