Obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree has become an important factor in helping individuals excel in the progressively competitive job market. The global workforce is becoming more and more educated and skilled, and as a result, getting a degree is vital. Many jobs now require that employees complete some amount of higher education. When deciding which degree to pursue, it is important to consider your finances and long-term career ambitions.
The Undergraduate Degree
A Bachelor’s Degree is also known as an Undergraduate Degree. In the US, Bachelor’s Degrees require a total of four years of study, or 120 semester hours. Some schools work on quarter hours, but the principle is the same. The student should also choose a major field of study by his or her second year of university. It is imperative that the university be accredited or the degree will not be recognized by graduate schools or employers. US universities typically offer a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degrees. The type of degree differs based on the discipline being studied.
Eligibility to Apply for a Bachelor’s Degree
In order to be eligible to study for a degree, the individual would have had to complete a total of thirteen years of primary and secondary education. A secondary school report and exam transcripts are necessary to apply to a US university. Although the grading system may be different in foreign countries than in the US, foreign applicants can request a grading standard guide in which foreign grades are converted to the US grading system when applying. When sending records and reports, ensure that all documents are in English, otherwise they will be discarded.
Requirements to Gaining Bachelor’s degrees
The student must maintain a passing grade point average and also complete a number of elective courses to be able to be awarded with a degree. You can select which courses you wish to complete depending on what the university offers and which ones are available. When choosing a major, you will be given information on the courses and credits required of you in order to obtain a diploma. Certain courses will only grade on examinations as a formal method of assessment, while other courses will look upon course work and essays in addition to examinations in order to determine your overall grade.
Alternatives to the Degree
An Associate’s Degree is often achieved either as a stepping stone to a Bachelor’s Degree or as a degree unto itself. In semester hours, a minimum of 60 credit hours must be earned with a grade point average of at least 2.0. It is equivalent to two full years of undergraduate study. Both degrees include the same courses and requirements for the first two years. However, Associate’s Degrees are not always accepted at all four year colleges and universities. Sometimes additional coursework is required. The credits are transferable from school to school, but may not carry equal weight between schools. This allows students to begin with an Associate’s Degree, and continue either immediately, or at some time in the future, to study for their Bachelor’s Degree.
An Associate’s Degree is not always sufficient in gaining employment as many companies require four years of upper level education. When seeking to enter the job market, it is always advisable to have a Bachelor’s Degree in hand, at a bare minimum due to the competitive nature of the job market.
