There are several difficulties that international students face over what the average student faces. International students are a very diverse population on the American college campus and their numbers are increasing steadily. Additional cultural adjustments place these students at a greater risk for psychological problems as well. Many international students don’t know where to turn for help, causing their overall achievement to sometimes diminish and their dropout rate to rise.
The United States Educational System
One of the primary difficulties international students face is adjusting to the American educational system. In the U.S., teachers and professors do not often offer assistance and guidance without it being requested from the student. International students often have to adjust to a different study schedule and style of studying, and class participation is often challenging due to language differences. In addition, there are times when it is difficult to find a suitable support system to help an international student settle in.
Social Adjustments
Adjusting to the social differences of various countries is another of the difficulties international students face. Differences in clothing, language, mannerisms and religion can often be the root cause of culture shock. On a side not, although many American students are on their own for the first time, their families and friends are often available for support, whereas international students are not. With time zone differences, it is also often difficult for them to even talk to their family or friends on the phone.
Academic Challenges
Many international students were academic leaders in their country of origin, but now find themselves struggling to adjust and learn. Class participation, which is a large part of college life in the U.S., can be the biggest of the difficulties international students face because of problems learning and understanding the American language. The more the student knows about the U.S. and its language prior to coming abroad to study, the quicker and more smooth the transition will be.
Ways to Help an International Student
There are several things a person can do to help with difficulties international students face. One very important thing is to help the student find social, community and school projects and programs that the student could participate in. Feeling a part of a group in a new setting can help tremendously. In addition, let the student know you’re willing to listen and help them find any available assistance within their school.
Although there are many reasons international students choose to come to study in the U.S., including to obtain a degree, learn a new culture, gain professional training, and enhance their personal growth, there will be some degree of difficulties international students face. Most schools and communities in America offer help to new students but this needs to be discovered. Schools that don’t have programs specific to new international students can often lead them to organizations that do.
