Information about Doctoral Degrees
A doctorate degree, also referred to as doctoral degree, is something that not many people want to pursue. It is either that they no longer have the time, the money, or the desire to achieve such a high level of education. However, people who are passionate about learning and those who simply want to achieve the highest educational achievement in academics pursue a doctorate degree. In fact, individuals from many different countries in the world go to the U.S. in order to attend a graduate school program, and earn a master’s and even a doctorate degree. This article will provide information about doctoral degrees for foreign individuals who wish to earn their degree in the U.S.
Doctoral Degrees in the US
There are three types of doctoral degrees in the country, namely: Research Doctorate, Professional Doctorate, and Honorary Doctorate. A Research Doctorate is awarded to an individual after a thesis has been completed in his chosen field of research. The fields of research can range from language, history, chemistry, and even astrophysics. A Professional Doctorate, on the other hand, is awarded to those who do not engage in research work but instead, engage in a specified profession. This could range from business, medicine, law, and even dentistry. Lastly, an Honorary Doctorate, or a honoris causa, is awarded to an individual who made a significant contribution to a certain field or to society.
Admission to Educational Institutions
Attending doctorate programs in U.S. colleges and universities would require foreign students to comply with at least the standard requirements. While some requirements and standards vary, it is a general notion that to be accepted in major educational institutions, a student must have attained good grades, have ample funding, have already completed the required coursework, have secured a Certificate of Eligibility (Form I-20), and should also pass the TOEFL or IELTS tests. He will also be required to undergo an admission process for international students, and this could take more than 18 months to complete.
Financial Aid for Foreign Doctorate Students
The United States government understands how expensive it can be for students, foreign students in particular, to take up doctorate degrees in universities. For this reason, there are grants and scholarships available for non-US residents. In addition, there are student loans available for foreign students as well. Grants, scholarships, and loans can be availed but only if you are able to meet their requirements. For student loans, the basic requirements would include being currently enrolled in a program, having a US resident co-signer, and passing a credit and background check.
Earning doctoral degrees in the US could prove to be a very good way of securing a better future for anyone, especially for foreign individuals. In the US, people with higher educational attainment earn a lot more than those who attained a lesser educational degree. This is one reason why at least 1.8 million Americans currently have doctoral degrees.
