Information about ETS
The Educational Testing Service, or ETS, is a nonprofit organization created for educational testing and assessment. Currently, it conducts approximately 50 million tests every year in more than 9,000 locations around the world. This organization conducts admission tests and other standardized tests for colleges and universities. International students need to take these tests so that they will be given a visa and an admission to a college or university.
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
A registered trademark of ETS, TOEFL is being administered around the world, and is recognized by more than 7,500 educational institutions in 130 countries. TOEFL comes in 2 formats, Internet-based test (iBT) and paper-based test (PBT). A TOEFL test will be able to determine if your English skills will enable you to perform well in an academic classroom. It is a 4-hour test consisting of 4 sections: reading, listening, writing, and speaking. Because TOEFL has an academic composition and is also the most reputable English proficiency test in the world, having high TOEFL scores will prove to be very advantageous to any foreign student seeking to enroll in a program in the US.
Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
GRE is another standardized test run by ETS. It is considered a requirement by most of the major graduate schools in the country and definitely one of the tests a foreign graduate student needs to take in order to be admitted in a US graduate school. For those who intend to take it in the US, the test will be a computer-based one, however, other countries around the world can conduct a paper-based GRE. There are 4 sections in GRE, and these are: verbal, quantitative, analytical writing, and experimental sections. The duration of the test is approximately 2.5 hours.
TOEFL and GRE Fees
TOEFL fees vary from country to country, but the range is from $150 to $225. GRE fees on the other hand, range from $140 to $175. There are testing fee waivers for students with financial needs, provided that they are able to meet the waiver requirements. Both of these tests can be cancelled however the cancellation must be done at least 3 days before the testing date. There is also an option to reschedule a date for testing, and just like making a cancellation, you would need to advise the testing center at least 3 days prior. Both cancellation and rescheduling would entail a specified amount to be paid.
Preparation
Students who are bent on studying in the US must make sure they pass the ETS tests. As mentioned, their chances of getting admitted in the country with a student visa, as well as getting accepted by the college or university, would be impacted by their scores on standardized tests conducted by EST. To help ensure that they get a passing score, they can go through review preparations, provided by various review centers in their own country or in the US. There are also online review centers and downloadable review materials they can use for self-study. A foreign student can opt to take the review or go for the self-study program, or even both, depending on time and budget.
