Information about F-1 International Students
Students who wish to attend an academic program in the US would require an F-1 international students visa. Without it, they cannot set foot in American soil, unless if they are there for other purposes. An F-1 visa allows them to stay in the US for up to 60 days after their academic program has been completed, and may extend for 12 months if they are able to work under a practical training program. Qualifications
In order to apply for an F-1 international students visa, an applicant must have a permanent residence outside the US. He or she must be able to establish proof that he will return to his country upon completion of the program. Note that he can only study in the educational institution through which his visa has been granted. He can be given a temporary work visa upon completion of the program however his family members are not given permission to work in the US, unless they have the required work permit.
How to Apply
To apply for an F-1 international students visa, an applicant will need to fill out Form DS-156 and pay a non-refundable fee. He/she can secure the form at any US consular office and will also need to secure a passport and a photograph (37x37mm). The applicant will need to show the consulate a filled out and signed I-20A-B and I-20M-N forms, which will be proof of being accepted in a US college or university. As mentioned, an applicant will need to provide documents that will indicate their strong ties to his or her home country. Proof of property and car ownership, business papers, and family ties in the home country will help establish a person’s inclination to return home after finishing the academic program.
Permission to Work on an F-1 Visa
Remember that an F-1 visa’s sole purpose is to study in the US. F-1 international students may be allowed to work however they need to meet some criteria. The first and foremost criterion is for the student to maintain his status, requiring him to still attend school full-time. He must also have valid documents and will not engage in any unauthorized or illegal employment. There are three types of employment for F-1 visa holders, which are: incident to status, authorized by DSO (Designated School Official), and recommended by the DSO and USCIS (United States Citizenship and Information Services).
