Information about F-1 Visa
F-1 visa is a student visa, which enables international students to study full-time in the USA. Such visas are offered only via academic institutions. If an international student wishes to pursue further studies in the US, here are some aspects about the visa the student should know about.
Process of Application
The process of applying for a F-1 visa begins by finding the particular school and applying to it. This is also a good time to explore housing information in and around the school premises. Once an application gets accepted, the student will need to get the I-20 form from the designated school and make payment towards the receipt of I-901 SEVIS. The student information is then appended to the database of SEVIS and an ID number is allotted to the student. After this, the student is scheduled for an interview with the local US consulate or embassy. Once the visa is provided, the student is expected to intimate the school about the anticipated date of arrival. A student can enter the country not before 30 days from when the study program starts.
Documentation Required for Interview
Once the student’s interview has been scheduled with the local consulate or embassy, they will need to furnish a few documents. These include signed valid passport, I-20 form, receipt of SEVIS I-901, diplomas or transcripts from previous and current institutions, description of the intended study program etc. In addition, the student should also provide information on accommodation, evidence of financial stability to pay towards living and tuition expenses. Status Maintenance
Once a student is admitted into the US through an F-1 visa, he or she will need to maintain their status. The student should also ensure full attendance of the particular school of authorized study and the complete study course should be pursued. Should the student need to stay in the US longer than the stipulated educational program, he or she needs to adhere to specific procedures. Special procedures should also be followed if the student needs a transfer to another school. Employment off or on campus will be limited to 20 hours in a week during school sessions.
Status Change
If a person is already living in the USA based on a non-immigrant temporary visa, they can change their status to an F-1 visa. To do this, the person will first need to select the intended school of study and complete the application form applicable for international students. This school has to be authorized and approved from the USCIS to be able to issue such visas to international students. Once the application gets accepted, the student needs to procure an I-20 form from the school which will get added into the database of SEVIS.
