Information about Full Time Enrollment Requirements
The Full-time enrollment requirement for international students is something that needs to be researched so that applications can be completed approximately eighteen months before the start of the school year. There are many requirements the students must be prepared to fulfill before, during and after application. Once these requirements are fulfilled, the United States welcomes international students, along with the diverse backgrounds they bring to their chosen campus.
The Immigration and National Act Requirements
The Immigration and National Act is quite specific in regards to the requirements that must be met by applicants to qualify for the student visa. Applicants must have a residence abroad with no immediate intention of abandoning that residence; intend to depart from the U.S. upon completion of the course of study; have strong ties to their home country; and possess sufficient funds to pursue their chosen course of study.
The F1 Student Visa
The first of the full-time enrollment requirements is to apply and obtain the F1 student visa. The F1 visa is issued to international students who attend a full-time academic or English Language program at a U.S. college or university. They are expected to complete their studies no later than the expiration date on their I-20 form, although the student can remain for 12 months after securing a degree to work under the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program.
Applying and Obtaining the F1 Student Visa
The F1 student visa should be applied for 120 days before entering the U.S., and the international student should not enter the U.S. more than 30 days before the start of the school year. If a student wants to enter the United States more than 30 days prior to the start of the school year, they must additionally apply for a visitor’s visa. College or University Requirements
Admission to U.S. colleges and universities can be very competitive and each school has their own individual requirements. To determine if the international student’s full-time enrollment requirements are met, the student must have attained good grades, completed challenging school work, and developed a strong command of the English language. If English language is not the international student´s mother tongue, they will be required to complete a TEOFL course.
Working While Enrolled Full-Time
International students completing full-time enrollment requirements also have strict restrictions while carrying a student visa. They can only work part-time (20 hours or less) on the college campus. Unfortunately campus jobs may be hard to get and the pay is not high so the student should not count on this kind of job for anything more than just a supplement. Full funding should be secured prior to coming to the States.
Full-time enrollment requirements are not hard to obtain with prior planning and effort. International students find completing their college education in the United States both challenging and fulfilling.
