Information about Graduate Education
Anyone that is dreaming of getting a graduate education in the US should be certain about what direction they’re going to head for. It’s best for foreign students to research possible future career prospects in the US, and maybe make their choice based on this. While applying, students are already filled up-to the brim with loads of questions; therefore, wondering about what they’re going to do afterwards should not be on their minds. USA is one of the best places to study from all across the globe. The job opportunities offered here are innumerable and the array of majors, as well as minors, offered at various US universities are incomparable to those of universities in other countries.
Graduate Studies in the US
The graduate education system followed in the US is different as compared to the one in European countries. For foreign students that only have a high school diploma, the only option is to choose undergraduate studies. The same applies for students who have received a diploma after three years of study. Therefore, if a foreign student wants to become eligible for graduate education in the US, they must have four years of study in their background. If a foreign student is eligible for graduate studies then he or she can apply to any of the US master degrees, which usually last two years. Thereafter the student can continue with a PhD for even greater specialization and higher recognition.
US Graduate Programs
The master’s degree in US universities focuses on 2 year programs and these degrees can be sought in either one or two educational fields. The most general courses are for the MA (Master of Arts), focused on humanities or liberal arts, and the MS (Master of Science), through which they can focus on engineering, business fields, technology etc. Students may also want to opt for professional master’s degree such as Med (Master of Education) or MBA (Master of Business Administration). The PhD is, however, the highest scientific and educational level that can be obtained in the US. To get a Doctor’s Degree (PhD), one must have a Master’s Degree first, and then go through scientific studies which can last between three and seven years.
Score High on Tests
Various exams must be passed by foreign students who wish to seek education in the US and one of these exams is the GRE. This exam tests the basic skills of a student and determines, if the applicant is eligible for US universities. No matter which program a student wants to follow, it’s good to score high in the GRE. This also helps foreign students to get scholarships, which can be a good financial aid to their education. For example, Manchester College and St. John’s University cater to the needs of the students and provide 50% discount on their graduate education, based on GRE scores.
Foreign students that are not eligible for graduate education in the US must get a Bachelor’s degree first, such as BS and BA. Also, most of the universities need them to have good SAT and/or ACT scores. If applicants come from a non-English speaking country, it is mandatory for them to take the TOEFL exam and gain more than average scores.
