Information about Graduate Student Housing

Students are considered graduate students once they begin studies beyond a four-year Bachelor’s Degree. This includes both Master’s and Doctorate degrees. One of the biggest decisions that graduate students make, aside from the academic aspect is normally where they will reside. There are several choices for gradate student housing, and typically the housing they choose will depend on whether or not they are married, single, or have children. There are several choices a gradate student can make. Following are some of the student graduate housing options that may be available, depending on the university they are attending.

Campus Housing

Many of the prestigious universities have on campus housing in place for graduate students. Typically, the on campus student graduate housing will have strict by lines relating to the criterion that is required to move into the housing facility. In most cases there is an extensive waiting list for graduate student housing that is on campus. For example the Residence Hall at Harvard University will only allow single students or married couples to live on campus, provided both of them are graduate students. Students with children will not be allowed to live in Residence Hall. One of the advantages to living on campus is that statistics show that more students who reside on campus will have better success than students who choose to reside elsewhere.

Apartment Communities

Almost all universities have a series of apartment complexes that they own specifically to house students who do not wish to reside on campus. These apartment complexes are obtainable with a number of optional amenities. They are usually available in one, two and three bedroom models. Many of them allow pets for students who cannot live without their furry friends. Many of these complexes have swimming pools, fitness rooms and playgrounds for students with children. They are often located very close to shopping centers and grocery stores to make it easier for students to get the supplies they need without having to travel across town. Most times, these apartments are even located within a very close proximity to the university, making travel to school easy and hassle free.

Private Residence

Many graduate students have established a life for themselves and already own a home. Obviously these students would not need to consider graduate student housing. Often, the graduate students who do own a home will make a room available for rent for another graduate student to live in. This helps the home owner with a little extra income while they are studying and paying tuition, and it is usually more convenient and cost effective for a single student to rent a room, rather than a whole apartment. Also, many families rent rooms as a source of extra income to pay the rising costs of mortgages and utility bills. Rooms in private residences help both the graduate student as well as the family.

It is always important to keep the waiting list in mind so that if on campus living, or living in one of the university’s apartment complexes is desired, there will be an apartment ready when the time comes.
