An International Driving License is a necessity for anyone who will be driving in a country that is not their own. It must be accompanied by the original valid driver’s license of the country of origin. This document may also be used as a secondary form of identification.
Advantages
The International Driver’s License may assist in overcoming any difficulties that may be encountered while driving in a foreign country. A difference in language is often one of the first things that may cause a problem. If a driver is stopped for any reason, both the original driver’s license and the International License can be presented at that time. This will often enable any questions or problems to be solved quickly and easily.
Obtaining the License
The International Driver’s License is issued by an IDL service and is an official translation of the original driver’s license that has been issued in another country. The IDL service will not issue this document unless proof of a current, valid driver’s license is shown at the time of application. Regulations require that a person be 18 years of age and have a recognized driver’s license. Two passport type photographs must be submitted at the time of application. No exam is required to obtain the license because it is simply a translation of the original.
Other Uses
This document may also be used as a form of identification but keep in mind, however, that it cannot be used alone for identification purposes. The original license must be presented at the same time. Other instances may apply where these documents must be presented. Renting a vehicle is one example where an International Driver’s License and the original document is required before the vehicle is released. It is also important to know that this documentation is not government issued and cannot be used as such.
Who Should Apply
Any person who will be visiting for a period of time in a foreign country should obtain an International Driver’s License. This could include students, anyone who is doing business in another country, or vacationing families. If driving is going to be done in any of the countries, having this document is an advisable necessity. The rules and regulations of the road vary from country to country, and many people may not be aware of this fact. There may be a time when law officers will stop certain vehicles for traffic violations. Being able to present the International Driver’s license will go a long way in determining whether or not a ticket is issued.
The driver’s license is a form of identification that is used and accepted in most countries. This document, along with the passport or visa, is a necessary piece of information needed to establish identity. Do not make the mistake of thinking an International Driver’s License is not necessary. Even if the visit is short term, if driving a vehicle is involved, obtaining this document is very important. It doesn’t take a great amount of time to apply and it will be worth it if someone intends to drive.
