International Student Taxes

Information about International Student Taxes
The American tax system can be very confusing for international students coming for studies to the United States. Many international students end up paying too much in taxes because they simply don’t understand the tax system or tax breaks they are entitled too. Quite a few international students actually end up paying US income taxes when they should be receiving a tax refund. Students can avoid this situation by properly filling out and submitting the right tax forms specially intended for international student taxes. Many international students who fill out their tax forms properly will be pleasantly surprised when they get money back from the government.
Federal Tax Forms that International Students Should Be Filling Out
A student can avoid paying international student taxes and actually get a tax refund by filling out the proper tax forms and submit them to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Fortunately these tax forms are simple and most people can fill them out without the help of a tax preparer. Most international students will only have to fill out Form 1040NR-EZ. This is the non-resident alien tax return. This is a very simple form that the average college student should have no problem filling it out.. All international students will also have to fill out Form 8843. This form indicates that the student is exempt from US income tax and entitled to a tax refund. Students who don’t fill out this form will not get a tax refund.
Other Forms for International Student Taxes
International students should also file Form 843, the claim for refund, even if they are not working because this form will enable the student to collect any money they are owed by IRS. International students who are working at any sort of job should fill out Form 8316. This form will enable the student to get any Social Security or Medicare taxes they’ve paid while in the US refunded to them. Students that do not have a US Social Security number will also have to fill out form W-7 the application for an Individual Tax Identification Number. International students without this number will not be able to claim a tax refund. All of the forms with regard to international student taxes, refunds and federal tax information are available on the IRS website.
State Taxes for International Students
In addition to the federal income tax collected by the IRS, some international students could be subject to state income taxes. The state taxes are not collected by the IRS, so students in states that have an income tax will have to file a state tax return as well. A student can find out if there is a state income tax and how to file a state tax return by contacting the state government, or their school administration. The IRS will not be able to help a student with state income tax.
International student taxes should not be a problem for most of the students studying and working in the United States. Instead of paying income taxes, many of these students should be getting a tax refund from the US government.
