International Student Tuition Waiver
|
Information about International Student Tuition Waiver
International students entering the US to attend college can expect to pay 3 to 4 times as much as a resident student. Along with living expenses, this fee can be considerable. Financial assistance in the form of a Partial Tuition Waiver is available at most colleges, but the number of students far outweighs the waivers available.
The Partial Waiver
All international students will be reviewed for financial assistance in the form of a waiver that is offered by the college of choice. International students that are seeking to obtain a degree will be automatically considered for the partial tuition waiver. There are no forms to fill out. If the waiver is awarded, the amount of money allowed for funding will be shown on the student’s immigration documents. These would be the I-20 and the DS-2019 papers. An official letter from the university awarding the international student tuition waiver will be entered into the student’s package of acceptance from the facility.
Maintaining the PTW
The waiver, also called PTW, or partial tuition waiver, has to be maintained in order for it to remain effective. An international student who has been awarded the waiver must complete a certain number of unpaid hours of volunteer service. The students must actively participate in on campus events to have the hours credited. The volunteer hours must be reported in an official capacity by the supervisor to the International Education Offices. Service hours must be reported by a designated deadline for the PTW to remain in effect.
Tuition Savings with the Waiver
Savings can be substantial with the help of the international student tuition waiver. The waiver will set aside the portion of the tuition that is non-resident and would otherwise normally be charged to an international student. To continue receiving the waiver, along with the volunteer hours required, a student must maintain a 2.5 grade point average, or GPA. Failure to adhere to these regulations will result in the waiver being withdrawn. If the waiver is not awarded during the first semester, an international student will be eligible the second semester if the GPA is 3.0 or higher, and 3.6 or above for a graduate student.
Different College Requirements
Undergraduates who wish to be considered for an international student tuition waiver at certain other colleges must be either a new, or a new transfer student to be considered. They must also be an undergraduate who is seeking a degree. The application for the partial tuition waiver must be completed and returned by June 1 of the current year. A score of 600 or more must be earned on a TOEFL exam. English language proficiency must meet non-resident criteria. The student must also agree and commit to living on campus in the residence hall or college facilities. The award will renew automatically if the student continues to reside on campus and maintains a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Each college or educational facility has its own set of rules and requirements pertaining to the international student tuition waiver. Students who need this assistance should begin researching the partial tuition waiver information before they enter college.
