International Student Visa Requirements

Information about International Student Visa Requirements
International students who wish to attend college in the US are very welcome to do so. Usually, all the information needed to secure a visa will be sent by the college or university. Acceptance by the institution is necessary to apply for the International student visa, and requirements will be listed.
Basic Information
The college or university will send the student a form called an I-20. This is not the visa, but rather, an application for a visa. If a visa is granted, the I-20 form, along with a passport, the visa, and other paperwork will be used to gain admission to the US. Since it takes about 4 to 6 weeks for the visa to be obtained, it is recommended that the student apply early in the summer. It should also be noted that applying for the visa relies on the fact that acceptance from the college or university has already been granted. This school must be on the list of schools that have been accepted by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services.
More Information about the Visa
There will be numerous forms and documentation that an International student will have to provide in order to finalize the visa process. Proof will have to be supplied that he or she is going to have the financial means to live in the US. While all this may seem tedious and complicated, there is help available from the university professionals who will be able to assist with the processing of the visa requirements and related paperwork. There are also officials from the US in each country who will be able to help.
Educational Requirements
Each International student must also demonstrate that he or she knows enough of the English language to participate in the studies. They must have completed a course of study or studies that would normally be required for enrollment in a college or university. Exceptions may be made for the student who does not speak English and will be enrolled in classes that will teach the language, or if the classes are to be taught in the native language of the student. The selected institution will be able to offer more information on these visa requirements.
Financial and Other Matters
Each International student who applies for a visa must show proof that he or she has, or will have, sufficient funds to cover tuition and all related expenses such as living expenses, for the time he or she will be residing in the US. This is part of the requirement needed. These students must also show that they are only going to be living in the US for the duration of their educational studies, and no longer. All of these requirements must be met before a student visa will be issued.
Other Requirements
Any International student entering the US must show proof that they are in good health. Although no inoculations are required, you must prove that you are not HIV positive. Anyone with this disease will be denied entry to the US. A background of any criminal behavior is also grounds for refusal.
