Information about International Students Insurance

International students who come to the US to attend an educational facility, university or college, must comply with requirements requiring them to have health or medical insurance before they will be allowed to attend the school. The student will need to show written proof that the international students insurance policy is in effect at the time of admission. The policy must be kept current for the duration of the schooling.

Why Colleges Require Insurance Coverage

The health and well being of the international student is first and foremost in colleges. Not only is the tuition very expensive, but the student must also have sufficient funding to manage living expenses, as well. The international students insurance coverage will offset the cost of medical care should the student become sick, have an accident or have to be hospitalized for any reason. Being so far away from home, family, and the regular doctor just makes insurance coverage an all around good idea for both the student and the college.

Choosing an Insurance Company

Colleges have different insurance companies that meet the criteria of the school on several levels. If the student cannot show proof of insurance when he or she arrives, the college will recommend that coverage be purchased from one of the companies that they have endorsed. Of course, the student isn’t obligated to do this, and may purchase an international student’s insurance policy from a company of their own choosing.

Compatibility with College Requirements

There may be times when the international students insurance policy does not comply with the guidelines required by the college. This may happen if the coverage was obtained from an insurance company from the home country of the student, who may have purchased the policy because it was affordable. Unfortunately, new coverage will have to be purchased, or additional insurance will have to be added to the existing policy so that the health and safety guidelines required by the college are met.

Sponsor Purchased Insurance Coverage

International students who come to the US through a sponsorship program have the option of allowing the sponsor to purchase the required international students insurance for them. This sponsor may be an organization or a private US citizen. The sponsor will make the insurance application in the name of the student and fill out all necessary paperwork or documentation. When the student arrives to begin his or her studies, the policy will go into effect. The good thing about having the sponsor buy the insurance is that they are familiar with college guidelines and requirements and the insurance coverage will comply with all of them.

Buying Insurance in the Native Country

If the student decides to purchase the insurance in his or her own country because it is more affordable, the college should be contacted, and a list of the requirements can be faxed to the insurance company so that all will be in place by the time the student arrives in the US. Requirements for international student insurance may not be met by foreign underwriters, and as a result, the student would need to take a gap policy, or a brand new policy in worst case scenario.
