Information about J1 International Students

Any International student who needs to obtain training that is not readily available in his or her country may apply for a J1 visa. The J1 visa program has become very popular lately. Many students are able to earn sufficient money to finance their whole time in the US.

J1 Visa Sponsoring Organizations

The US State Department must designate and approve any J1 visa sponsoring organization. Many of these sponsors are from the private sector or organizations that are public. It is difficult to sort through the organizations to find the best one. The numbers of J1 work and travel organizations have increased considerably lately. Once a fee has been paid, this organization will obtain the J1 International student visa. While there are many reputable J1 visa operators, it pays to research each one thoroughly before handing over any money.

J1 Visa Requirements

J1 International students will be able to enter the US to participate in studies not available in their home country. DS-2109 and DS-7002 forms are issued by the sponsoring organization, and along with other supporting documents will be presented to the US Embassy before the J1 visa is issued. There are currently 13 different Exchange Visitor programs, or J1 Visitor programs. In the case of International student J1 status, the foreign student will be able to attend classes and work in the designated time allowed.

Before Entry to the US

Each J1 participant, International student, and dependants must pay for their own round trip airfare. They must also have with them sufficient funds to cover all their expenses while residing in the US. This would mean that there is enough money to pay for living expenses, college tuition and other related matters. Health insurance is also a mandatory requirement to obtain a J1 visa. The sponsoring organization will often be able to help procure the necessary insurance, and sometimes be able to help the International student find a job.

J1 Visa Categories

Private, academic, and government categories are included and available for J1 visa status. The Private sector includes physicians, secondary school students, teachers, counselors for camp, summer related work and travel, au pair, and trainee and interns. Both the academic and government branch categories include International students attending college, short term scholars, specialists in a particular field, research scholars or professors, and international or government visitors. For an International student requiring a J1 visa, the process will be handled by the facility where the education will take place.

Sponsoring Education Facilities

Any department of a college or university that wishes to sponsor an International student through the Exchange Visitor program must fill out a department request form. This form then must be returned with the required documentation which can be found in an application packet checklist. This list is made available by the International Students and Scholars Service. The J1 visa is different from other non-immigrant classes and is part of a program that is dedicated to education and the exchange of cultures.
