Information about Luggage
Heading off to university is an exciting time. The luggage you are bringing should reflect the duration of your stay, and how often you will be returning home throughout the year. Most residence halls, and rented furnished houses or apartments, will already supply the basics. There will be a bed and a desk with a table lamp in your room. It may be necessary to purchase a college size refrigerator for the dorm room, but all else besides linens is probably included.
Absolute Essentials
The utmost essentials that each student needs to pack in their carry-on luggage would consist of a form of photo identification, a medical insurance card, and a passport. Also bring a mobile phone and charger. It will also be necessary to have a power converter as the United States is on 110 voltage. Do not, under any circumstances, bring valuables or irreplaceable items due to the risk of theft. That being said, do not bring huge amounts of cash either. Keep cash to a minimum and bring ATM and credit cards instead. If the cards go missing, it is possible to call the bank to inform them of this, and cancel the missing cards. The student will then just need to wait a couple of weeks for replacements to arrive.
Things to Bring
Bring a pair of everyday shoes, sport shoes and formal shoes. Bathroom slippers and flip-flops are also appropriate. Think about the location of the university. If the weather fluctuates frequently, bring shoes for both sunny weather and rainy weather. Similarly, bring mainly everyday clothes, a few dress outfits, and one or two formal outfits in case a specific occasion demands a formal dress code. Many students also opt to bring their own towels, bedding sheets, pillows and hangers. Putting a laptop in the luggage would also be a good idea, unless it will be carried onboard, or if the student wants to do all work and leisure computer activities on campus computers.
Optional Items
The luggage you bring to school may include a music player and speakers. A camera would also be a good idea to take photos to provide lasting memories of university life. Students with more room in their luggage can also bring a printer. However, bear in mind that as the students change dorms at the end of the year, they will need to bring stuff home over the summer, or rent a storage bin. Decorating items such as posters and photos are also useful to transform the room into a more personal area.
Chances are that students will be bringing more than they actually need. There are a number of things that can be purchased anywhere, even in the college store. Buy washing powder, trash bags and batteries after moving into the accommodation. Toiletries and stationary can be bought after arriving at university, or can be brought from home if there are preferences that may not be available in the States. Just remember to pack as lightly as possible, especially when flying, as the airlines have started charging extra for more than one bag.
