Information about SAT
The SAT, Scholastic Aptitude Test, is a standardized examination that is required by all students applying for university within the US. The contents and assessment methods of examination have been adjusted over the years in order to better determine the capabilities of individual students. The three components of the exam include critical reading, writing and mathematics. The score alone does not guarantee university entry, while it can result in being refused entry if it is not within the acceptable range. However, the SAT score can boost your overall admission if you follow these simple tips and techniques.
Time Management
As with any examination, time management is of utmost importance. Ironically, it is easy to lose track of time when under time constraints and under pressure. Attempt practice questions at home on a regular basis. It is very important to practice the exam under the same conditions as those under which the test will be administered. The more practice you get, the better you will perform on the exam.
Reading the Instructions
Many students get hung up on the examination questions. Read the instructions very carefully. The SAT examination is a relatively short exam in which you must demonstrate all your knowledge to the best of your ability. Do not waste time reading the instructions over and over. Reading the instructions slowly and carefully once is enough, but most examiners allow ample time to review the format prior to starting the timed tests.
Answering Questions
Answer all the easy questions first. Skip the difficult ones, and don’t spend too much time on each one. These questions can always be reviewed later. Only correct answers will count towards the final score, so answer everything possible first and then go back to attempt those that have been passed over. If possible, calculate or outline on scrap paper, and remember to clearly differentiate the rough work between the answers.
What to Bring
Upon entering the examination you will need to have the admission ticket and a valid form of identification. Also bring sharp 2B pencils and a calculator with fresh new batteries. It is advised to bring a light sweater or cardigan to the exam along with a bottle of water and a small snack, such as an energy bar which can be eaten during the break.
The Night Before
Look over previous notes, but do not attempt to memorize and cram the night before an SAT examination. Cramming the night before, and sleeping late, can cause drowsiness during the exam and has been scientifically proven to negatively affect the student’s performance on the exam. Preparation for the exam can take months or even years. Prepare in well in advance.
Luckily, for individuals who freeze up with nervousness during an exam, there is the option of retaking the test. However, a retest may not look good on your personal record, even if the score lies within one of the top percentiles. Prepare in advance, and if possible, attend SAT preparation classes to ensure everything is understood well in advance.
