Safety On Campus

Information about Safety On Campus
Maintaining safety on campus is something that should be of ultimate importance for all students, but especially international students. Safety on campus is an issue for international students coming from foreign countries due to the adjustments that will need to be made in order to adapt to US culture, and perhaps the additional stresses of living in a large city if that is where the campus is.
Be Aware of Your Surroundings
Students need to keep in mind that college campuses are available to the public, and at any given time outsiders can enter the campus. These means that college campuses can become potential targets for predators due to the fact that these criminals are aware of the naivety of students and their tendency to be lax on personal security. Especially in a big city will it be very important for students to keep the windows and doors to their living accommodations locked at all times to ensure that intruders do not enter the premises.
Know Campus and Local Emergency Numbers
It is very important that students know the emergency phone numbers for the local area in order to get in touch with the city police, campus police, or emergency medical services. Most students carry mobile phones these days so it is very easy for them to program these emergency telephone numbers into their phones for safety on campus. Students should also be aware of where the security offices are located on the campus in the event that something occurs while the student is walking around on the campus.
Avoid Making Yourself a Target of a Crime
Potential predators look for people that appear to be vulnerable when selecting a victim to attack. Some easy ways to avoid this is by not traveling alone, but walking around campus with a roommate or friend. Roommates should also be made aware of an approximate time when you will be home if you will be out late studying. Students can also avert potential dangers by avoiding secluded, low foot traffic areas at nighttime so that they don’t find themselves in a situation where they are unable to easily call for help.
Protecting Yourself and Following Your Instincts
Many schools also teach general self defense classes to train students how to deal with an attacker. It may be a good idea for the student to attend this type of class especially if they are female. Instincts are also important because if you return home one night and things look out of place at your home, it may be a good idea to assume that something is not right and to alert police before investigating further. This is a very simple way to avoid the risk of burglary or home invasion style crimes.
Choose a School in a Safe Neighborhood
While selecting a school for its academic merits is certainly important, choosing a school in a safe neighborhood is an automatic way to maintain safety on campus. While researching schools, you should also check out the local crime statistics for the neighborhood that the school is located in. These are just a few tips to help international students maintain safety on campus.
