Information about Social Security Number
International students studying in the United States will often be required to apply for a social security number (SSN). This is the case if the student is doing any type of work or receiving a scholarship. Here’s how international students can apply for a social security number.
Purpose of a Social Security Number
The United States government uses social security numbers to track any individual that is earning taxable income for tax reporting purposes. The money that is earned from a job or scholarship falls into the category of taxable income. In addition to that, employers will not be able to issue the international student a paycheck unless the student has a valid social security number.
Length of Time Required
The process for application for this number is about four weeks long. First the international student must submit the appropriate government forms. These government forms will typically require documentation regarding the student visa status and birth information so it is important that the student inquire with the office to find out in advance what documentation is required.
An SSN is Required before Applying for Employment
Most employers will not allow an international student to begin working without a valid number, so it is important that the student set aside enough time to undergo the application process well before applying for employment. The requirement for the number applies to all jobs both on campus and off-campus. The office of international students may be able to assist the student in finding out what paperwork is required if the student is applying for an on-campus job.
Exact Paperwork Required
There are a number of documents that will need to be brought to the closest SSN office. The exact documents may change over time so it is best to speak with an agent at the office directly to get the latest information as to what to bring. Typically they require a letter from the international student services office if is for an on campus job, your passport, visa and other immigration paperwork.
Benefits of Having a Social Security Number
Having a SSN will also allow you to apply for an account at a local bank. So instead of storing your money in a bank account from your home country, you can apply for a bank account at a US bank. Again you will have to contact the individual bank branch to find out what paperwork is required to open your new account but most definitely you will have to bring the social security card with you.
Off-Campus Jobs
When you apply for an off-campus job at a company, they will also request this number in order to issue your paycheck. Actually, it is illegal to hire anyone for employment in the United States unless they have a valid SSN. You will need to provide them with all of your immigration papers and the social security card once you accept the position in order to get put on the company payroll. By setting up a bank account you may also be able to set up direct deposit for your checks.
