Information about State Abbreviations
Before October of 1874 the United States Post Office actually preferred for states to be spelled out completely. However, abbreviations are popular and therefore became widely accepted. Since then the Post Office has recognized a list of common abbreviations for all states and territories in the United States. Although the purpose of State abbreviations was for mailing, it is still common for these abbreviations to be used for other purposes as they are recognized throughout the United States. However, these abbreviations are still the discouraged by the Post Office.
The Purpose of State Abbreviations
The current list of abbreviations that is familiar today was adapted in 1963 during the post offices switch to zip codes in the address. Since then, of all the abbreviations only one has been changed. Nebraska was originally NB but is now known as NE because the NB of was too similar to New Brunswick Canada. In 1987 the United States Sec. of Commerce agreed to allow these recognized abbreviations within government documents. Initially, they suggested their own set of abbreviations but the United States Postal Service list became standard. Although communication is often performed by e-mail, there are many situations where United States Postal Service is still in use. In order for mail to reach the appropriate destination, it must be addressed with the appropriate state abbreviations.
Two Letter Codes for State Abbreviations Not Intended for Extended Use
Most United States citizens forget that these accepted abbreviations are not intended for any types of communication other than mail. Although it is helpful to have a list of the abbreviations of all 50 states, whenever a research paper or report is being used the state name must be spelled out. The purpose of a state abbreviation is not intended to save room on the page like many other of abbreviations in the English language. The only acceptable reason to ever make use of any two letter state abbreviation code is for writing an address.
