Information about Student Life
It must feel really good to have finally decided upon the right college, and it may be time to think about student life. A lot of factors went into this decision. It is likely that location, size, courses available, and cost were among primary considerations. It is also likely that international students are not quite sure what to expect after arriving on campus. They may even have had ideas implanted in them before arrival, but there is nothing to be worried about. College is an excellent time for all students. If students remember to be safe there are a number of risks and hazards that can be avoided.
Managing a Social Student Life
One of the things that each international student will have to deal with is a social life. Each individual will be faced with a number of choices. As long as it is remembered that college is being attended for one reason, education, that student will do just fine in his/her student life. Individuals may be faced with peer pressure to drink. In fact, it may be true that there is a large amount of drinking going on behind the scenes.
Because of this, students will be forced to manage their own social life. In the United States it is not legal to drink until 21 years of age. But the fact is, there will be many situations where alcohol will be made widely available to a student, both in bars and in dorms. Before choosing to participate in alcohol consumption, keep in mind that it is still illegal. An international student could be facing fines or more serious charges, including expulsion and deportation, if caught.
Making Friends at School
Not all situations at college will be as controversial as the drinking issue. Each student will be provided with many opportunities to make new and lasting friendships. College is a time to grow as an individual. There will be a number of other students from different backgrounds, cultures, and places. It is the perfect time to create new memories that can last a lifetime.
Aside from education, student life in college is also very social. There are a number of rallies, lectures, events, and similar to meet new and interesting people. It is not difficult to make new friends if you remember to have confidence in yourself and understand that they may be just as unsure of themselves. There is no reason to stay locked up in your dorm room. It is healthy for you to mingle with other students to find new friendships with people of similar or very different interests.
Because student life can be very stressful, especially in the beginning for international students, many opt to live in a dorm. If this is the case try to remember that most dorm rooms are very small and there will be no use for big stereo systems or large TVs. A lot of time will be spent with a new roommate. Therefore take the time to meet the individual before coming to school. This will help make the transition into college that much easier.
