Information about Travel Outside The US
There are times when an international student may wish to travel outside the U.S., but is uncertain as to what rules must be followed, and if there are any situations that would prohibit them from reentry once they have left the country. In fact, certain requirements must be adhered to in terms of documents that will be needed and having a valid visa at the time of reentry.
Documents Needed to Travel Outside the U.S.
When international students intend to travel outside the U.S., documents required to get into any given country will be determined by each country independently. The only areas of concern that can be dealt with in the United States are in terms of documents needed to reenter this country. Most importantly, a valid student visa and passport must be in force, when coming back into the country. If the student’s visa will expire while the student is traveling abroad, it is highly recommended that the student renew the visa prior to exiting the U.S., as it may take 6 to 8 weeks or longer to obtain a new visa. The length of time it takes usually varies from country to country, so beware of getting back in time for the commencement of a new year’s classes.
What to Do If New Entry Visa Is Needed
If the international student intends to travel outside the U.S., but will need a new entry visa before returning, it is important to know what documents will be required by the United States Embassy/Consulate in order to issue the new visa. Exact information can be found on the government’s website at www.travel.state.gov. However, as a general rule of thumb, it is recommended that the student take some specific documents with them when leaving the country. This is an area that should be extremely well planned to avoid any complications and/or delays in getting back to school.
Documents Required for a New Entry Visa
The first thing to be considered is an official copy of school transcripts. Also, a letter of good standing that states the student is a current full time student. These will be obtained from the academic department at the university and/or from the International Education Center. All financial documentation should be available as well, including an updated SEVIS I-20/DS-2019. These documents may need to be updated if the student’s financial situation has changed significantly since the originals were filed. If this document does need to be updated, it will need to be completed by the academic office prior to leaving school to travel outside the U.S.
Many times students wish to travel outside the U.S. to return home for summer vacation, or the Christmas holidays, and the visa and/or appropriate documents are set to expire during that timeframe. The best line of attack would be to plan well in advance to make absolutely certain everything is in order prior to leaving the country. Many countries require longer periods of time to issue documentation, and that may put the student in jeopardy of missing the next semester/quarter.
