Information about Travel To Mexico
Quite often international students take advantage of school vacations and holidays to travel to Mexico which is located just south of the continental United States. Also, students in fields such as archaeology go on digs in ruins there as part of the practical requirements. For whatever reason, it is possible to travel to Mexico and safely reenter the United States if certain conditions are adhered to. For information on the exact requirements to enter Mexico, that embassy or consulate would need to be contacted.
Documents Needed to Reenter the United States
When students travel to Mexico it is vital that they plan the trip well in advance to have ample time to gather the necessary documents to reenter the United States without getting held at the border. Of course, a valid passport and visa are required and the passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date the student reenters the country. Also, it is necessary to have an SEVIS I-20/DS-2019 with an official signature on the form dated no earlier than 12 months prior to reentry. It is advised that international students do not surrender the I-94 which is stapled to their passport when entering Mexico, or when boarding a plane if staying less than 30 days.
Conditions of Reentry to United States when Visa Expired
If necessary, provide a photocopy of the I-94 to the airline or at the border, and explain to officials that the stay will be for a period less than 30 days. That I-94 is critical in gaining reentry into the U.S., should the student’s United States visa expire while in Mexico. The student is eligible for automatic revalidation of his/her visa under very particular stipulations; primarily that the student is not a foreign national of a country thought to be a state sponsor of terrorist activities and that the stay in Mexico was less than 30 days. The only other requirement is having the original I-94 stapled to the student’s passport.
Countries Not Eligible for Automatic Revalidation
Countries listed on the Department of State website, http://www.state.gov/s/ct/c14151.htm, will change from time to time. Students who are residents of those countries may be eligible to study in the United States and then travel to Mexico, but they are not eligible for automatic revalidation if their visas expire while in that country. At the moment the list of countries only includes four, including Iran, Cuba, Syria and Sudan. Again, since 9/11 that list has varied significantly, so it is essential to keep updated on the list of countries, as well as on all documents required for reentry.
One thing that attracts international students to study in the United States, beside the fact that more than 50% of the worldwide top ranking universities are located here, is the diversity of cultures. The United States is also centrally located in North America, which makes it easy to travel to Mexico, or take a quick trip to Canada. Usually travel across borders is smooth and event free, but there are times when an international student may be held up because documents aren’t in order.
