Information about US Time Zones
When traveling in the United States you should be aware that there are different time zones across the continental U.S. Each time you cross over one of the time zone lines you will need to reset your watch to make sure that you have the correct time for the location that you are in. It is not that difficult to make sure that you have the correct time as you travel but a little research is necessary to find out what time zone you will be in at you final destination.
The Time Zones
There are four time zones that span from the West Coast to the East Coast of the United States. In addition to the four time zones that cover the continental U.S. there are two more time zones that cover Alaska and Hawaii. In all, this means that there are six different possible time zones you could be in from any state in the United States.
Hawaii and Alaska
Hawaii and Alaska are the only two states in the entire country that have their own time zones. Hawaii time is on Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Time (HST) and Alaska’s time zone is appropriately names Alaskan Standard Time (AKST). Hawaiian time is two hours ahead of Alaskan time.
Pacific Standard Time
This is the first time zone for the continental U.S. This zone includes 4 states, California, Nevada, Oregon and Washington. Popular tourist destinations in the Pacific Standard Time (PST) zone include Las Vegas in Nevada, Seattle in Washington, and San Francisco and Los Angeles in California.
Mountain Standard Time
This time zone is one hour later than the Pacific Standard Time zone. This zone covers Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico. There are a lot of great tourist destinations in this time zone including the Grand Canyon in Arizona and the Rocky Mountains located in Colorado. Also, Aspen, Colorado gets a lot of tourist traffic each year during the winter season for snow lovers looking for great slopes to ski and snowboard on.
Central Standard Time
The Central Standard Time (CST) zone covers a wide variety of states including Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Alabama and a lot more. There is an endless amount of tourist destinations within this time zone. You can visit the home of country music in Tennessee, any of the hundreds of tourist sites in Texas, the amazing city of Chicago in Illinois, and so many more spectacular places.
Eastern Standard Time
This is the last time zone that covers the most part of the United States. This zone covers areas from the great lakes around Michigan to the New England states around the North East coast and all the way down the coastline to the beautiful state of Florida. Great tourist destinations include the city of New York, the capital of the United States, which is Washington, D.C. in the state of Virginia, and the multitude of gorgeous beach locations in Florida like Miami, Daytona Beach, and Orlando.
