Account managers are the main link between an organisation and a particular group or groups of its clients and are at the core of strategic customer relationships. Internally, this position greatly supports the sales and customer service departments and is crucial to increasing a company’s market share.
Account Manager Job Duties:
If you enjoy a fast paced life which requires you to constantly interact with a variety of people and have a flair for identifying new business possibilities, you might be well suited for a job as an account manager. An account manager usually works closely with a sales team.
Account Manager Responsibilities Would Include:
1) Meeting existing customers to promote further sales of a company’s products or services.
2) Understanding the requirements of customers and co-ordinating with the appropriate departments, such as customer service, production or after sales support, to ensure that these requirements are fulfilled.
3) Organising a prospect customer data base and prioritising customer calls.
4) Meeting prospective customers to generate new business and actively pursuing the closing of sales.
5) A complete understanding of what the company is able to offer and effectively communicating this to clients.
6) Identifying, investigating and resolving customer concerns.
7) Monitoring the team’s actual performance against targets.
8) Staying abreast of current market trends and new technology prevailing in the relevant industry.
Account Manager Knowledge and Skills:
1) A thorough understanding of the products/services offered by the company.
2) Knowledge of the relevant industry and market.
3) Empathy and good listening skills to properly and patiently understanding client’s needs.
4) Good writing skills as well as the ability to create conversation, as face to face, telephonic and written communication forms a part of daily activities.
5) The ability to quickly analyse situations, solve problems and take decisions.
6) Time management skills, to be able to allocate sufficient time to various clients.
Account Manager Educational Qualifications and Experience:
1) A Bachelor’s degree in the relevant field.
2) 2 – 5 years experience of working with a similar product/service in the relevant industry, in a customer oriented position.
3) Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to work with customised database and customer relationship management software.
Account Manager Salary and Benefits:
1) The industry average is considered to be $45,000 to $60,000 per annum.
2) Many companies offer a base salary plus a commission package of 1% – 4% of revenue generated.
3) Most organisations offer health/medical benefits and 401(k) with match but this varies from company to company.
