Anaesthesiologist Job Description
|
Anaesthesiologists are responsible for overall patient comfort during major and minor medical procedures. This type of physician administers anaesthetics to patients before they undergo operations, so that the patient is desensitised to pain during the process.
Anaesthesiologist Job Duties:
If you have a keen interest in chemistry, in understanding the effects that chemicals contained in anaesthetics can have on the human body, and have an analytical mind, you might be interested in pursuing a career as an anaesthesiologist.
Duties include:
1) Discussing previous medical history, allergies and concerns with patients prior to administering anaesthetics.
2) Based on the type of procedure to be carried out, deciding which anaesthetic to administer and which is the best method - local, spinal caudal or intravenous.
3) Making sure the patient is safely placed under anaesthesia.
4) Monitoring the patient’s vital signs and watching for irregularities while the operation is being conducted.
5) Recording the amount and type of anaesthetic administered as well as the patient’s condition during the entire procedure.
6) In case of an adverse reaction to the anaesthetic, being able to stabilise the patient’s condition.
7) Post operation, overseeing the patient as the anaesthesia begins to wear off and during initial recovery.
8) Administering anaesthetics and monitoring patients undergoing emergency surgery.
9) Managing the pain of patients in intensive care units and those with chronic illnesses.
Anaesthesiologist Knowledge and Skills:
1) In depth knowledge of anaesthetics and their effects on patients with a wide variety of medical conditions.
2) Much of the success of an anaesthesiologist’s job depends on meticulous research of all parameters relevant to the impact the anaesthesia will have on the patient.
3) Working well with others under stressful conditions is vital, as the physician will be required to be part of a team of surgeons and nurses and to be part of quick decision making in unexpected circumstances.
Anaesthesiologist Educational Qualifications and Experience:
1) This highly specialised job requires a degree in medicine (MD) or in osteopathy (OD).
2) Four years residency with one year as an intern.
3) Certification by the American Board of Anaesthesiology (ABA).
4) Additional training in a particular subfield such as paediatric or cardiac anaesthesiology is required for specific jobs.
5) Particular state certification is required.
