Auto Mechanic Job Description
|
An auto mechanic specialises in repairing, servicing and maintaining vehicles such as cars, trucks, buses and other motor vehicles.
Auto Mechanic Job Duties:
If you are fascinated by how a motor vehicle works, enjoy trouble shooting and working with tools, a job as an auto mechanic would be ideal for you.
Several auto mechanics run their own business. But if you are employed by a company, you could be required to either work with different models of a particular vehicle, such as various models of cars or you might be required to work with only a particular type of vehicle for example, a fleet of transportation trucks of a particular model.
An auto mechanic generally has the following duties:
1) Diagnosing and fixing problems with vehicles.
2) Servicing, overhauling and maintaining vehicles.
3) Advising clients on proper maintenance and prevention of malfunctions and breakdowns.
4) Making modifications to vehicles, if required.
Auto Mechanic Knowledge and Skills:
1) Since this is a highly technical job, a thorough understanding of the working of motor vehicles and their individual components is vital.
2) Ability to work with hand tools such as pliers, wrenches and screwdrivers and to operate larger tools such as wheel balancers
or hydraulic lifts.
3) Good diagnostic skills to be able to analyse problems quickly.
Auto Mechanic Educational Qualifications and Experience:
1) A high school diploma or GED is usually adequate, though some employers prefer individuals who have completed automotive mechanic/technician training courses offered by colleges/high schools.
2) Certifications such as Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) and I-CAR or completion of courses that have been certified by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) are always favoured.
3) Since the job requires expertise, a candidate with 5 – 10 years practice will be favoured, more so if he is specialised in a particular area, such as bodywork, engine or transmission systems.
4) Entry level jobs are also available, especially from firms who have recently expanded and prefer to train individuals to suit the company’s particular requirements.
Auto Mechanic Salary and Benefits:
1) Salaries vary depending on expertise and experience. Those with less than 1 year’s experience can expect annual salaries to range between $20,000 and $40,000, whereas those with 2 to 5 years experience could receive between $25,000 and $45,000. Hourly rates usually range from $11 and $20, while overtime rates range from $15 to $25.
2) Those working with large firms can generally expect benefits such as paid vacation, 401(k) and life insurance.
