Bookkeepers play an important role in the finance departments of any company or business. They are the ones that are solely responsible for the company’s balance sheets. Bookkeeper Job Duties
The primary duty of a bookkeeper is to manage the accounts or the books of a business or a company. The amount of work and the responsibilities that a bookkeeper may have, will depend upon the size and of the company that he or she is a part of. In addition to this basic responsibility, a bookkeeper may have to:
1) Perform administrative and clerical functions.
2) Authorize or making purchases of raw materials and supplies.
3) Make inventories of stock and other materials.
4) Prepare invoices, collect and make payments.
5) Make deposits and withdrawals from the bank and tend to any other bank work.
6) Balance the cash books, prepare account statements and receipts for payments.
7) Keep track of expenditure and cash in various departments.
8) Prepare the payrolls and ensure that salaries are paid out at the stipulated time.
Bookkeeper Knowledge and Skills
1) In-depth knowledge of bookkeeping and accounting in accordance with government laws and procedures.
2) Must know how to prepare, classify and store purchase orders, payment receipts and invoices etc.
3) Knowledge of how to prepare and present data in a table, chart or as statistical data.
4) Understanding of how to prepare and read financial and accounts reports.
5) Must be able to account for fixed and liquid assets on a regular bases.
6) Must have an in-depth understanding on tax laws set forth by the state and the ability to understand communication and documentation that is received from the department.
Bookkeeper Educational Qualifications and Experience
1) A lot of companies hire candidates with a high school diploma. However, it is crucial that their subjects include bookkeeping, business math and accounting.
2) Some companies require you to have a diploma from a business school or junior college.
3) Experience in working with business and accounting, software is also essential.

1) The average salary that a bookkeeper gets is around $28,000 per year. This figure however, differs from company to company. It also varies depending on the experience levels of the candidate.
