CEO Job Description
|
A CEO or Chief Executive Officer is required to provide overall leadership to the various departments of an organisation for the purpose of achieving the company’s objectives, while effectively managing its resources.
CEO Job Duties:
If you possess strong leadership skills, are good at managing time and resources, enjoy not one, but several aspects of business and can work with a variety of people, you might be suitable for the role of a CEO. This position is found in profit and non-profit organisations and usually reports to a board of directors.
The main duties would be to:
1) Develop the organisation’s goals, policies and overall budget.
2) Oversee the operations of all departments to ensure that they are running efficiently, and as per company objectives
3) Approve department procedures and policies.
4) Explore, identify and pursue new markets and other expansion opportunities
5) Develop strategies for particular departments, such as marketing, production or human resources, in conjunction with their respective heads.
6) Act as a liaison between senior management or heads of department and the board of directors.
7) Evaluate performance of senior management and identify personnel for key roles.
8) Review financial statements to determine company’s performance.
9) Keep abreast of industry developments and competitor activity.
CEO Knowledge and Skills:
1) The position calls for a complete understanding not only of each department in an organisation, but of an entire industry and its markets.
2) Multi tasking, stress and time management skills are important to be able to oversee all department activities.
3) The ability to interact with a wide variety of people from directors to workers is essential.
CEO Educational Qualifications and Experience:
1) A Master of Business Administration degree is usually essential, though sometimes a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management or Administration may suffice.
2) Most CEO’s have at least 15 – 20 years experience in a particular industry, as the knowledge and expertise required by their role can only be obtained after being in the field for a significant number of years.
3) Depending on the industry certain specific qualifications such as Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Professional Engineer (PE) may be required.
CEO Salary and Benefits:
1) Salaries range between $100,000 and $250,000 annually, including bonuses and commissions, with the highest paid individuals being found in the software, information technology, manufacturing and financial services industries.
