Chef Job Description
|
A chef is a professional cook, usually in charge of other personnel in a restaurant’s kitchen. He is responsible for giving direction regarding the preparation of meals and for ensuring overall quality of the dishes being served.
Chef Job Duties:
If you enjoy cooking and experimenting with various types of foods and flavours and have a broad appreciation of the different types of culinary arts, you may be perfect in the role of a chef.
A chef can be of various types, such as an executive chef who is in charge of the entire kitchen, or his direct assistant, the sous chef; a chef de partie who is responsible for a particular area of production and various chefs who specialise in a specific area such as pastry, grill, fish or a certain cuisine.
An executive chef may move on to become a restaurant’s general manager or a food and beverage director.
Depending on the level and position a chef’s duties may comprise all or some of the following:
1) Creating a menu.
2) Preparing meals or giving guidance on preparation.
3) Managing stocks of required raw materials.
4) Inspecting the quality of raw materials and prepared food.
5) Training personnel when required.
6) Costing and pricing of meals.
7) Planning employee work schedules.
8) Maintaining a clean work place, in adherence to health regulations.
Chef Knowledge and Skills:
1) A sensitive palate, to distinguish subtle differences in flavours and arrive at the desired taste for each dish.
2) Ability to deliver and discern consistent quality, even when working under time constraints.
3) Creativity to be able to offer clients new and interesting dishes.
4) Management and team skills to supervise, give guidance, plan and organise activities in a kitchen.
Chef Educational Qualifications and Experience:
1) An Associate Degree in culinary arts, Associate of Occupational Studies in culinary arts, Associate of Applied Science or a Bachelor’s degree is usually required.
2) Specialisations in particular areas such as baked goods, desserts, meats or grilled foods are beneficial for specific jobs.
3) Between 4 and 8 years of experience is preferred, but for specialised positions in excess of 10 years is generally favoured.
Chef Salary and Benefits:
1) Annual salaries range from $40,000 to $70,000, though highly specialised chefs working with famous restaurants and hotels may earn more.
2) Benefits usually include medical, 401(k), retirement plans, dining discounts and tuition reimbursement but this will depend on the individual organisation’s policy.
