Chemical Engineer Job Description
|
A chemical engineer uses his in depth knowledge of engineering and chemistry to design or operate equipment that converts raw materials into useful products. Alternatively, he may work on the development or improvement of products which contain chemical substances, a few examples of which are fertilizers, detergents, food, plastic, medicines, and paper.
Chemical Engineer Job Duties:
If you have a creative mind, a wide knowledge of most science subjects and would like to apply this knowledge in the development of processes and products which use chemical substances, a position as a chemical engineer may be ideal for you. One of the most important fields of work for a chemical engineer today is the design and implementation of environmentally conscious processes and in the field of alternative energy forms.
Duties are specific to each industry and position, but broadly include:
1) Designing and operating equipment used in chemical product manufacturing processes, as per environmentally friendly regulations.
2) Planning the layout of factories which carry out industrial chemical processes, including the sequence of processes such as heating, distillation, crushing and mixing.
3) Conducting research and experiments related to the development or improvement of products which utilise chemical substances.
4) Designing monitoring and control systems for chemical plants.
5) Working closely with chemists who have developed a new product or discovered a new potential use for one, to work out the viability of successfully producing and utilising the new discovery.
Chemical Engineer Knowledge and Skills:
1) In depth knowledge in several fields of science, including chemistry, physics, mechanical engineering, mathematics, design and computers.
2) Creativity to discover new products, processes and their uses.
3) Logic, reasoning and problem solving skills are required to evaluate different possible solutions, anticipate problems that may arise and arrive at the best answer.
Chemical Engineer Educational Qualifications and Experience:
1) A Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering is essential. Research and development positions usually require a Master’s or Doctorate’s degree. Certain jobs may require specific degrees such as in environmental engineering.
2) 2 – 5 years experience is usually required, though highly specialised positions may require more in a particular field.
3) Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
4) Certifications such as Certified Professional Engineer (PE) and Six Sigma Green/Black belt are beneficial.
Chemical Engineer Salary and Benefits:
1) Average salaries range from $60,000 to $90,000 annually, though pay rates may be higher in the petroleum refining and oil and gas industries.
2) Benefits usually include medical, dental 401(k), paid vacation, life insurance and training reimbursement.
