Chief Operating Officer Job Description
|
Responsible for the overall smooth functioning of a company’s internal activities, a Chief Operating Officer or COO usually assists a Chief Executive Officer (CEO), by attending to the company’s day to day operations.
Chief Operating Officer Job Duties:
If you have good organisational and team work skills and like working with the various internal processes of a business, as opposed to the external functions of marketing and selling, you might be well suited for the position of a COO. In some smaller companies, a COO may be required to perform the tasks of a Chief Financial Officer as well.
Though a COO’s responsibilities would vary depending on the size of the company, these usually include:
1) Providing direction to and setting targets for the company’s various operational departments.
2) Ensuring products or services are being produced in a timely manner and as per quality requirements.
3) Maintaining relationships with key suppliers and vendors.
4) Monitoring inventory, warehousing and movement of products.
5) Making sure that various departments such as production and human resources are functioning as per their approved budgets.
6) Regularly meeting with heads of department of production, information technology and human resources to ensure that their departments are functioning in accordance with the organization’s goals.
7) Ensuring that new policies are implemented in operational departments.
8) Acting as a mediator to resolve inter-departmental conflicts.
Chief Operating Officer Knowledge and Skills:
1) A COO must be detail oriented to be able to make strategic plans practically feasible.
2) Leadership and team building skills are essential to set goals and foster a spirit of harmony between all the departments.
3) Planning and organization skills are required to utilise the company’s resources effectively.
4) The ability to prioritise work, given that a number of tasks, related to various departments, are required to be performed on a daily basis.
Chief Operating Officer Educational Qualifications and Experience:
1) COO’s are usually required to have a Master of Business Administration qualification, though sometimes if the candidate has good experience a Bachelor of Business Administration will suffice.
2) Experience of at least 10 years is required, though most in this position have over 20 years.
3) Depending on the industry, certifications such as Certified Public Accountant, Project Management Professional or Certified Professional Engineer may be required.
Chief Operating Officer Salary and Benefits:
1) Average annual Chief Operating Officer salaries range from $95,000 to $200,000 depending on company size and turnover.
2) Stock Options, Medical, dental, 401(k), insurance and paid vacation benefits are usually offered.
