Civil Engineer Job Description
|
A civil engineer is responsible for planning and executing the construction of various structures such as buildings, bridges, power plants, highways and airports and ensuring that they are structurally sound. Civil engineers can specialise in a particular area, such as environmental, structural, highway, geotechnical, transportation or earthquake engineering.
Civil Engineer Job Duties:
If you are interested in constructing buildings and other structures and are good at physics, chemistry and engineering, you might enjoy pursuing a career as a civil engineer, which could be as an independent consultant, at a public utility company, in the government or in a construction company.
Duties would include:
1) Scrutinising survey reports and blueprints to arrive at which is the best way to construct a particular structure at a given place.
2) Ensuring that legal requirements are being met while making construction plans.
3) Calculating various engineering parameters such as load requirements and stress factors, required for the construction of a particular project.
4) Testing soil and other materials to ascertain the appropriateness and strength of foundations.
5) Preparing the layout of the construction site, along with required equipment, such as cranes, dumpers and hydraulic equipment.
6) Determining and budgeting for raw materials.
7) Directing operations at the construction site, and regularly making inspection visits to monitor progress.
8) Preparing reports on the feasibility of public projects such as airports, roads and bridges.
Civil Engineer Knowledge and Skills:
1) In depth knowledge of design and engineering concepts, tools and software such as SolidWorks, Pro/Engineer and Cobalt.
2) Thorough understanding of construction materials and how they integrate with each other, such as concrete, bricks, asphalt, sand and others.
3) Awareness of safety, environmental and other legal norms that have to be adhered to when constructing a structure.
Civil Engineer Educational Qualifications and Experience:
1) A Master or Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering is essential.
2) Certified Professional Engineer (PE) certification from a particular state is required.
3) A minimum of 4 years experience is required, with more for jobs specialising in a particular area.
4) LEED Accredited Professional, Professional Engineer License, ACI Concrete and Occupational Safety and Health Administration certifications are also favoured.
5) Experience with engineering design and AutoCAD is preferred.
Civil Engineer Salary and Benefits:
1) Industry hourly rates average at $25 to $50, while salaries of Civil Engineers are $50,000 to $80,000 per annum.
