Computer Operator Job Description
|
In charge of monitoring and managing computer hardware systems in an organisation, a computer operator usually controls either a mainframe computer or several minicomputers and ensures their security and efficient day to day use.
Computer Operator Job Duties:
If you would like to work with computers in a role that supports various other professionals and assists them to complete their tasks effectively, you might enjoy the job of a computer operator. Often computer operators move on to become information technology specialists.
Responsibilities would include:
1) Understanding requirements of a job, and accordingly setting up and controlling the appropriate system/s.
2) Ensuring the smooth running of systems, by conducting periodic checks, identifying problems and resolving them
3) Maintaining log books of errors - when they occurred and how they were resolved - in order to become more efficient at their resolution.
4) Notifying technicians about system malfunctions.
5) Depending on the job profile, maintaining computer networks and assisting users with connecting to these networks or their common peripherals, for example printers.
6) Backing up files, if required.
7) Working with software programmers to test new software and informing them about user difficulties.
Computer Operator Knowledge and Skills:
1) An in depth knowledge of hardware and software, circuit boards, processors and chips.
2) Good listening skills to be able to understand difficulties faced by users and good communication skills to patiently and effectively explaining complex computing issues to various computer users in simple language.
3) Good analytical and reasoning skills to quickly identifying where and why problems are occurring.
Computer Operator Educational Qualifications and Experience:
1) Generally a high school diploma is required as operators are often trained on the job, though some jobs may call for a college degree in computer science or computer engineering.
2) Depending on the nature of the job, experience required could range from 1 – 4 years.
3) Certifications such as Microsoft Certified Professional, CompTIA A+ Service Technician and CompTIA Network + are beneficial.
4) Different jobs may call for specific knowledge of different mainframe or microcomputer operating systems such as UNIX, IBM OS 390, Microsoft Windows.
Computer Operator Salary and Benefits:
1) Hourly pay rates of computer operators range between $12 and $20 and overtime rates between $20 and $30. The average annual salaries are usually between $30,000 and $50,000.
2) Benefits vary from company to company but usually include medical and paid vacation, company pension plans and 401(k) benefits.
