Correctional Officer Job Description
|
A correctional officer works in a prison, penitentiary or reformation facility, supervising those who have been convicted of a crime and are serving a sentence or alternatively those who have been arrested under suspicion and are awaiting trial.
Correctional Officer Job Duties:
If you are keen on being a part of the criminal justice system but not as a lawyer or judge, are able to work in a physically and mentally demanding environment, maintaining law and order amongst criminals and are not intimidated by the risks this job brings, you might be interested in the position of a correctional officer. It is essential to bear in mind that correctional officers have a high rate of job injuries, though usually not fatal. Jobs are usually in government or federal prisons or correctional facilities.
Responsibilities would include:
1) Maintaining order within the institution and ensuring that its inmates comply with rules and regulations.
2) Supervising inmates while they perform work that has been assigned to them.
3) Maintaining a daily log book of activities.
4) Searching inmates, their accommodations and postal mail for prohibited items such as drugs, weapons and other material.
5) Inspecting facilities on a regular basis to ensure that they are secure and will not allow prisoners to escape.
6) Resolving conflicts between inmates.
7) Being the first to respond to riots, fires and other emergencies.
8) Reporting violations, security breaches and other unusual occurrences at the facility.
9) Escorting inmates to courtroom sessions, medical facilities or as otherwise required.
Correctional Officer Knowledge and Skills:
1) A commanding and self confident presence to control and deal with criminals.
2) Ability to be calm and composed when faced with intimidating persons.
3) Capability and licenced to carry and operate a fire arm.
4) Self defence skills are essential.
Correctional Officer Educational Qualifications and Experience:
1) A high school diploma is usually sufficient, but sometimes a Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in criminal justice might be required.
2) Experience of 1 to 4 years is usually the norm, with more in a few cases.
3) Completion of training conducted under the guidelines of the American Correctional Association, American Jail Association and at the U.S. Federal Bureau of Prisons training centre.
Correctional Officer Salary and Benefits:
1) Average correctional officer salary figures are between $25,000 and $50,000 per annum.
