Environmental Engineer Job Description

Environmental engineers design and develop systems or procedures that aim to lessen the burden on the environment. They work on projects that conserve, recycle or reduce consumption of natural resources and bring down pollution levels. They either design projects specifically for this purpose or integrate this concept into processes whose main purpose is something else.

Environmental Engineer Job Duties

Common employers include engineering and architectural firms as well as government agencies, while some examples of the various projects include rainwater harvesting, industrial waste management, construction of green structures, solar energy systems etc.

Duties include:

1) Visiting and evaluating proposed project sites.

2) Assessing existing systems and making recommendations for improvement.

3) Conducting research and experiments to find out if a particular theory or idea is feasible.

4) Making reports of recommendations based on findings of experiments.

5) Designing processes to conserve water, energy and other resources as well as to reduce pollution.

6) Creating and testing prototype systems and making necessary modifications.

7) Working with other engineers and designers to implement a tested design.

8) Ensuring that projects or construction sites are in compliance with environmental laws and regulations.

9) In some cases working purely on large scale global research projects, such as the depletion of the ozone layer, acid rain consequences, air pollution etc.

Environmental Engineer Knowledge and Skills

1) An in depth knowledge of biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, design and environmental threats.

2) Creativity to come up with innovative solutions.

3) Good analytical and problem solving ability.

4) Familiarity with relevant prevailing environmental laws and regulations.

Environmental Engineer Educational Qualifications and Experience

1) A Bachelor or Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering or Chemical Engineering or a Ph.D for research positions.

2) The number of year’s experience required will vary depending on each position.

3) Certifications favoured include Certified Professional Engineer (PE), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), DOT Compliance, Occupational Safety and Heath Administration (OSHA) and ISO Internal Auditor.

Environmental Engineer Salary and Benefits

1) Depending on experience, hourly pay rates range from $20 - $60. Annual Environmental engineers salaries are also commensurate with experience and are between $45,000 and $100,000 per annum.
