IT Specialist Job Description
|
The job titles in IT sector are not clear cut and the responsibilities are not set in stone. The titles IT support specialist, computer support specialist and IT specialist are used interchangeably but as the title suggests IT specialists are expected to be specialists in a particular area of information technology. IT specialists may concentrate on one of these areas: software, hardware, network, web technology or data administration. They may work independently, with IT consultants or companies.
IT Specialist Job Duties
IT specialists are accountable for a particular area of IT in an organization. It is not uncommon, however, for senior IT specialists to be responsible for the IT infrastructure of an organization. As part of their duties IT specialists may have to:
1) Analyze computer systems.
2) Design and maintain computer systems.
3) Work in co-ordination with other departments of the organization at the different stages of analysis, design, maintenance, and implementation.
4) Management of intranet network.
5) Maintenance of servers.
6) Manage telecommunications in the organization.
7) Assign any unresolved problem to vendors.
8) Work in a team or lead a team with senior positions.
9) Set up a client server.
10) Allow access by setting up passwords.
11) It is not rare for IT specialists to head the IT department and take care of the entire responsibility of the department. In that case they have to prepare an IT budget, screen vendors, and order products.
12) Ensure that the IT department functions in ways to meet the business goals of the organization.
IT Specialist Knowledge and Skills
1) Must be familiar with all types of programming languages.
2) Comfortable working with various types of operating systems.
3) Network design and security.
4) Excellent presentation skills.
5) Good listening skills.
IT Specialist Educational Qualification and Experience
1) A bachelor’s degree in computer science, operation research, information science, mathematics, statistics or computer courses having 24 semesters is an essential requirement for candidates to apply for IT specialist jobs. In an organization where IT specialists provide just a support job the minimum qualification is an associated degree.
2) A master’s degree in computer related courses make a candidate eligible for better grade and pay.
IT Specialist Salary and Benefits
1) IT specialists earn salaries in the range of $36,000-$90,000. Candidates with associate degrees tend to earn salaries that are around the lower end of this data.
