Interior Designer Job Description
|
A lot of planning and creativity now goes into the designing of building interiors in terms aesthetics, environment friendliness, function, space, and safety. The job of an interior designer is to enhance these aspects of a building.
Interior Designer Job Duties
Museums, offices, hospitals, hotels, shopping malls, airports, schools, movie theatres, and homes – interior designers work on the interior spaces of any type of building they are hired for.
Here are some of the major duties that interior designers have to perform:
1) Understand the requirements of the client with regard to a building.
2) Visit the construction site physically.
3) Present an interior design to the client and make modifications wherever required upon the client’s suggestion.
4) Specify different colours, window and door curtains, flooring and wall covering, suitable furniture, shade of lighting and the type of artwork that would go with the interior.
5) Understand the building blueprint and work in association with architects, construction engineers, electricians, and building contractors.
6) Hire masons, carpenters, painters, plumbers and electricians to do their respective jobs.
7) May have to supervise assistants that help with several jobs such as: making calls, purchasing materials and co-ordinating with workers hired.
8) Operate within a budget.
Interior Designer Knowledge and Skills
1) Must be creative and be able to visualize designs. The ability to communicate visualized design to client verbally is equally important.
2) Proficiency in computer aided design (CAD) as it is preferred to hand make designs these days.
3) Must possess knowledge of building codes.
4) Have good knowledge of various materials that are used in interior decoration. Interiors with green design require environment friendliness and recyclable materials.
5) Familiarity with elder design will help interior designers to create interiors that are elder and disabled friendly.
Interior Designer Educational Qualifications and Experience
1) A Bachelor’s degree in interior design takes 2-4 years to complete. The duration of an associate degree is 2-3 years. A bachelor’s degree qualifies a candidate for an apprentice position, while an associate degree qualifies for an assistant position with a designer.
2) Experience of 1-3 years with an experienced designer prepares an interior designer to operate independently.
3) It is mandatory in many states for interior designers to obtain a licence to work. For that a minimum of six years of educational and working experience, out of which a minimum of two years of post secondary education, is required.

1) According to The Bureau of Labour Statistics interior designers earn a median income of $44,950 per annum in 2008.
