Juvenile Probation Officer Job Description
|
Probation officers monitor the activities of people who are convicted of crimes but are not sent to prison. Juvenile probation officers keep track of young offenders aged 18 or lower to make sure that they stay out of trouble and meet certain other requirements as set by the courts.
Juvenile Probation Officer Job Duties
The prime responsibility of juvenile probation officers is to give young convicted offenders a chance to reform themselves without going to prison and keep them away from further criminal activities. Juvenile probation officers have to perform a number of jobs including dealing with people that may have a criminal bent of mind. Job duties are to:
1) Monitor offenders’ behavior and activities.
2) Meet probationers, their family members, friends, employers, colleagues, and their teachers directly.
3) They need to meet probationers at their homes, schools or work places.
4) Offer counseling to all concerned for better behavior of offenders.
5) Seek the help of local communities, religious organizations, rehabilitation centers, and reformative organizations.
6) May have to ask serious offenders to wear a tracking device to determine their location at any point of time.
7) May arrange for job training for offenders keen on getting a job.
8) Monitor offenders with drug problems and keep in touch with their rehabilitation centers.
9) Visit the court often to gather background details of offenders, prepare case files, prepare pre-sentence reports and recommend sentences.
10) May recommend revocation of probation.
11) Testify with their findings and attend hearings.
Juvenile Probation Officer Knowledge and Skills
1) Should have a solid understating of the legal powers and limitations of a probation officer.
2) Calm and reasonable disposition.
3) Very good at judging criminal psychology.
4) Knowledge of violent behavior.
5) Self protection capability.
6) Detecting symptoms of drug addiction.
7) Must be in sound mental and physical condition.
8) Should have compassion for offenders and be positive about their reform.
Juvenile Probation Officer Educational Qualification and Experience
1) Four years degree course in psychology, criminal justice, sociology, law or correcting counseling is essential for this position.
2) Probationary officers with the Federal government need to have two years of field experience.
3) Those with a master’s degree in these fields may be exempt from experience requirement.
Juvenile Probation Officer Salary and Benefits
1) The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the median salary of probationary officers was $45,910 in 2008.
2) They are entitled for standard benefits as may be applicable to state or Federal government employees.
