|
Manufacturing engineers work in various industries where manufacturing of products are involved. They aim to maintain and improve the manufacturing processes. To achieve their goal they apply their knowledge of engineering theory and practice.
Manufacturing Engineer Job Duties
Manufacturing engineers design products and oversee the functioning of the entire manufacturing process. They may work with commercial and industrial engineers. They specifically have to:
1) Create designs of products.
2) Test designs created by others and approve them.
3) Train all technicians in the methods of manufacturing and quality principles.
4) Order and oversee purchase of manufacturing machines and tools.
5) Install manufacturing machines with the help of technicians.
6) Order and procure raw materials.
7) Formulate a manufacturing process.
8) Perform system analysis and determine how a system would work in different circumstances and conditions.
9) Perform a quality check for the manufacturing process and the products.
10) May have to detect the root cause of any failure in the manufacturing process.
11) Aware of safety issues involved in the production process.
12) Gather information from all possible sources about a product or machine.
13) Inform superiors about the decisions and actions taken in the manufacturing department.
Manufacturing Engineer Knowledge and Skills
1) Good with various machines and tools. Manufacturing engineers can do very less paper work but they have to spend a lot of time with tools and machines.
2) Familiarity with latest technologies and equipment used in a manufacturing process.
3) Good at designing products.
4) Knowledge of raw materials.
5) Knowledge of laws of physics including: fluid mechanics, atmospheric dynamics, atomic and sub atomic processes.
6) Knowledge of mathematics: algebra, geometry, calculus and geometry.
7) Must know computer aided design (CAD).
8) Good command over computer operations.
9) Knowledge of management.
10) File small financial reports of expenses in the department.
11) Good communication ability.
12) Team leading ability.
13) Good analytical ability, even to break up complex problems into smaller parts and trace the exact cause of a problem.
14) Good problem solving skills.
15) Ability to manage one’s time and time of the team.
16) The ability to sense a problem.
17) Capability to vary inputs and raw materials to create a variety of products.
Manufacturing Engineer Educational Qualification and Experience
1) A bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering or manufacturing engineering.
2) Candidates should have a background of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

1) According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median wages of manufacturing engineers was $89,560 per annum in 2009. They earned an average wage of $43.06 per hour.
