Mentor Resumes
|
|
|
|
Traditionally, mentors have been volunteers who offered support and leadership to protégés or young people. There is some controversy concerning mentors who receive compensation for their services. Mentors offer guidance and help individuals make contacts and meet their preset goals. Most mentors offer advice based on their own experience in business and in life. One of the primary differences between mentors and motivational speakers is that mentors work with individuals rather than groups.
About Sample Mentor Resumes
Since there are no set educational standards for mentors, it is important to relate your experience in business and volunteer mentoring programs in a resume. Many mentors are self employed but businesses are hiring mentors both as independent contractors and as employees to motivate their work force to set goals and to meet those goals. It is recommended that you review sample mentor resumes for visual guidance when creating your own resume.
How to Write a Mentor Resume
Resumes should always include the names and addresses of all the educational institutions which you attended and the degrees or certifications which you earned. An educational background in psychology or counseling is helpful for a mentor. The most important area of a mentor resume is past experience in either a business or volunteer mentoring program.
A list of past employers with their addresses and your job titles and responsibilities should be included in all resumes. Personal and business references with their contact information should be noted. It is especially helpful to include a former protégé in your references.
Mentor Job Description
Mentors are sometimes called life coaches and they assist individuals in meeting personal and /or career goals. They do this by helping clients set realistic goals and by pointing out behaviors or thinking which stands in the way of meeting these goals. It is the job of the mentor to help the individual overcome personal obstacles and stay motivated to achieve their potential. Healthcare facilities may employ mentors to work with patients as part of a holistic approach to the treatment of certain diseases. Holistic medicine puts emphasis on the patient rather than the disease and mentors who have experience with a disease and its treatment can help motivate others to fight their disease.
Mentor Salaries
According to Forbes magazine, the top ten percent of life coaches make over 6 figures per year. There is little information available on the median salary for mentors, partly because the concept of paid mentors is relatively new and partly because of the controversy surrounding the entire idea of paid mentors. Life coaches are basically mentors by a different name and the median salary for life coaches is about $50,000 per year. Salary figures are difficult to locate since many people in this field are self employed, but beginners can expect to earn between $20,000 and $30,000 per year.
There is little information about the job outlook for mentors and life coaches and much of what is available is published by training schools. It seems likely that the job growth rate for mentors and life coaches will be at least at the national average of 12%. In specialized areas like career coaching the job growth rate is predicted to be slightly higher.
